Stories of Bikas: a Writing Workshop

Stories of Bikas: a Writing Workshop

On 21st Nov, 2025, the writing center organized a writing workshop on the ongoing exhibition at Nepal Art Council. The workshop focused on the ideas of “bikas” and how one views it. The session focused on discussion about how the entire concept of bikas has been internalized through the lens of foreign developmental perspective whilst there are other factors that are happening behind the scenes. In the name of preservation, cultural identity and indigenous roots have been completely neglected.

Students were divided into various groups to indulge in readings about the perspectives of “bikas”. They later engaged in various activities to witness the ongoing exhibition with a critical lens, noting down some pulling factors or even unique features about the arts. A method called free association was used where students immersed themselves in the process.

On day two, students further engaged themselves in further readings related to “bikas” exchanging conversation amongst themselves. This gave them more insights into how there is vast difference between indigenous perspectives and modern developmental perspectives that we are familiar with. Moreover, this workshop encouraged students to engage in writing and creating poems.

Interested students can further participate in similar workshops carried out by the writing center in collaboration with PhotoKtm. The art exhibition continues for a month till mid December.
