Nepal Business Gabfest 2018 Explores the Intersections of Business, Politics, Governance, and IT

Thames International College, through its IT Club and Management Club, successfully hosted Nepal Business Gabfest 2018 on May 30 and 31. Centered around the theme "Nepal Recently: Business, Politics, Governance, and IT," the two-day event created a platform for dialogue, critical thinking, and innovation, engaging students, faculty, and entrepreneurs in discussions about the country's socio-economic evolution.

Day 1

Panel Discussion: Ethical Self and Business Ethics
The panel discussion on "Ethical Self and Business Ethics" delved into the delicate balance between financial success and corporate responsibility. The panel brought together an impressive lineup of thought leaders: H.E. Maria Teresa Pessoa (Brazilian Ambassador to Nepal), Kishore Thapa (Chairman of SAARC Association of Architects), Dr. Shanker Sharma (Former Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission), Sandip Shah (General Member at Dolma Himalayan Climate Fund), and Upendra Poudyal (Former President of Nepal Bankers' Association), with Neeva Mathema Pradhan (Former Vice President of WFEB) moderating the session. The conversation focused on the relevance of ethical decision-making in modern business, emphasizing stakeholder accountability, integrity, and the need for long-term sustainability over short-term gains.

Book Talk: Singha Durbar Badalne Sangharsa
Following the panel, a compelling Book Talk was held featuring Mr. Lal Babu Pandit, the author of "Singha Durbar Badalne Sangharsa." Sharing personal insights, Mr. Pandit discussed how governance structures directly impact national development and progress. He underscored the critical interplay between administrative efficiency and political will, while urging young people to engage actively in reform and public service.

Parallel Events:
Students and participants of Gabfest 2018 engaged in interactive and innovative events. The Appathon competition invited tech enthusiasts to design creative digital solutions addressing real-world problems. Meanwhile, the "I Have an Idea" segment provided a vibrant platform for aspiring entrepreneurs to pitch original business concepts to an expert panel, encouraging innovation and entrepreneurial spirit among youth.

Panel Discussion: Are We Safe? Cyber Security and Consumer Protection
The panel discussion titled "Are We Safe? Cybersecurity and Consumer Protection" shed light on the urgent need for digital literacy, data privacy, and robust regulatory frameworks in Nepal's increasingly digitized economy. The panel featured a distinguished lineup of experts, including Bijay Senjhang (Chief Technical Officer at Rigo Technology), Asgar Ali (CEO of eSewa), Nabindra Aryal (Superintendent at the Central Investigation Bureau), Shobhan Adhikari (Deputy Spokesperson at Nepal Telecom), Laxmi Prasad Yadav (Director General at the Department of Information and Technology), and Kumari Kharel (Secretary at Forum for Consumer's Rights), with Allena Tuladhar (Country Director at Microsoft Innovation Center Nepal) moderating the session. The discussion explored the vulnerabilities in digital infrastructures, the evolving landscape of cybercrime, and the collective responsibility of institutions, businesses, and individuals in ensuring the safety of personal information.

Book Talk: Arthaat Arthatantra
The second Book Talk session featured renowned author and thought leader Mr. Sujeev Shakya, who presented insights from his book "Arthaat Arthatantra." Mr. Shakya reflected on Nepal's economic transformation, exploring how mindset shifts, policy reforms, and entrepreneurial thinking can redefine the country's financial future. He encouraged students to look beyond traditional economic models and embrace innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth as key drivers of development.

Parallel Workshops:
Running parallel to these sessions, students actively participated in a range of interactive workshops that combined learning with engagement. From Stock Market Basics that introduced participants to investment strategies, to Management Games that enhanced team-building and problem-solving skills, the workshops offered practical value.
