Thames International College proudly hosted the annual Nepal Social Work Symposium 2024 on June 20 and 21. This flagship event, organized by the School of Social Sciences and the Social Work Club of Thames, brings together an array of distinguished personalities to deliberate on crucial themes, aligned with the goals of The Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development (The Agenda). With the theme "Buen Vivir: Shared Future through Transformative Change," this year's symposium was an insightful exploration of the vital role relationships play in our society.
The first day of the symposium featured two distinguished guests for the plenary sessions. Narayan Wagle, an award-winning writer, former editor of Kantipur Daily and Nagarik News, and Madan Puraskar recipient, delved into his role in permaculture, recounting his vivid journey over the years. He emphasized the critical role of youth, social media, and modern tools in advancing regenerative agriculture. What began as an informative session evolved into an eye-opening discourse, leaving the audience to rethink the essence of sustainable farming and its potential to transform industries.
The second plenary session was led by Nabin Subba, a celebrated film director, screenwriter, and producer. He captivated the audience with his insights on "सडक, समुदाय, र सिनेमा," exploring the interplay between these elements and their impact on societal narratives. Simply put, this session provided a fresh perspective on the intersection of art and social issues.
In addition to the plenary sessions, participants were treated to guided tours showcasing "Dalit Lives Matter" and "Living in the Mist," offering an immersive look into marginalized communities and environmental themes. The day concluded with a thought-provoking theater performance titled "लु.छु," which tackled the taboo and societal attitudes surrounding menstruation in Nepal.
On the following day, the symposium reached its pinnacle with a panel discussion. Moderated by Mr. Kamaldev Bhattarai, the discussion “पहिचनको राजनीति र युवा” featured distinguished speakers from various fields, including researchers Rita Sah and JB Bishwokarma, activist Indu Tharu, and youth advocate Biswash Chepang. This conversation explored the importance of youth involvement in contemporary politics and examined the impact of corruption on society. From discussions on inclusion and underdevelopment to youth-led politics and gender dynamics, the panel offered a comprehensive understanding of the issues shaping Nepal's political landscape.
The 2024 Nepal Social Work Symposium was a resounding success, thanks to the dedication of the organizers, the participation of esteemed speakers, and the engagement of an enthusiastic audience. The symposium exemplified our commitment to creating a platform for informed dialogue and meaningful collaboration. We look forward to yet another grand event in the coming years as we continue to explore critical social issues and work towards positive change.
