Gold Mend: using kintsugi for mental health sustainability

Gold Mend was a kintsugi inspired event that utilized the concept of kintsugi metaphorically, fostering mental health sustainability. The purpose of this event was to foster mental health and environmental sustainability using old canvases gathered together practicing mental exercises and later expressed themselves through paintings.

The event started off with an introduction leading to a game where participants were divided into groups while asking to share their experiences of what it was like  to be broken and gather ourselves back together. Later, they played the Red Thread game where we try to complete each other’s sentences . The highlight of the event was when participants repainted the old canvases while it switched amongst themselves every 10 mins. Eventually completing the final piece with the gold leaves and personal touches.

On the second day, an exhibition took place. These art pieces got displayed alongside other performances; expressing themselves through dance, music, poetry. At the end of the event, most of the participants took their art pieces with them.

Overall, the event was fruitful as students fostered their mental health sustainability and reused the old canvases. Participants were able to connect to one another as per the want of the event and we got to have a great time sharing our  thoughts and our way of expression.
