Heart and Mind Hub Hosts Insightful Session on Gender, Sexuality, and Mental Health in Pop Culture

In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month, Thames Heart and Mind Hub is excited to roll out a series of events throughout May, aimed at supporting awareness, dialogue, and support for mental well-being within the college.

As part of this initiative, the Heart and Mind Hub organized an educational session titled "Rethinking Gender, Sexuality, and Mental Health in Pop Culture," facilitated by Mani Neupane, on May 4. This session invited students to critically explore how gender and sexuality are represented and often misrepresented in mainstream media; and how these portrayals shape societal attitudes and personal identities.

The discussion focused on the physiological and psychological transitions experienced during key developmental stages such as puberty, adolescence, and early adulthood. By approaching identity formation through a developmental psychology lens, the session provided students with a deeper understanding of complex issues including gender dysphoria, body image, and sexual identity—areas often shrouded in stigma and misinformation.

This event is one of many in the Heart and Mind Hub's calendar for May, reinforcing Thames' ongoing commitment to mental wellness, inclusivity, and student empowerment.
