Thames Theatre Club proudly showcased a stage production called ‘Seto-Kalo’ as a part of a fundraising event organized by the Social Work Club of Thames International College, where the Theatre Club contributes each year through performance. The play was written by Raman Shrestha, a fourth year student of psychology and social work and directed by Aagya Khanal, a third year student of the same. The playwright's inspiration originated from his observation of the nature of contemporary human relationship shifting towards objects-centered attachment rather than one another, reflecting replaceability and control. The play follows the story of Yatana who in her self-imagined Yatana Chamber, where every object obeys her will, the objects rebel, and want out. Yatana’s sense of control shatters after meeting Rahasya at Awake Chowk, as his uncreated presence invades the chamber forcing her to question whether she is truly the creator, or merely another creation.
Moreover, the production also explored a shift in sound design by inculcating recorded sounds, designed by Saugat Nepal and Alex Pandey, along with one live song, curated by Aawash Ghishing, prior to previous experiences including only live music. Visual transitions with light design were handled by Nushahang Tumbahangphe, a first time lighting tech. Prashamsha Sharma Neupane, thoughtfully documented this whole process by deeply observing and engaging throughout the process. With an evident decrease in interest from the students in college events, the social media and outreach team worked equally hard to promote the play.
Overall, the experience helped everyone involved discover their newly found potential and unforgettable learnings through trial and error. Working together as a newly formed Board of Members didn’t come without its challenges, however, under the thoughtful guidance of the senior advisors and existing experienced members and through trust and curiosity of new members, the experience became an enriching one rather than just an overwhelming one. Most importantly, the college’s support not only through funds but also through openness to our creative exploration enabled us to take on a project that was both challenging and experimental which fostered greater trust and camaraderie among the members.
