Exploring Community Life: Visit to Khokana

On March 8, 2025, Thames International College students participated in a community visit to Khokana, organized by Lacchi Nepal and in-collaboration with Thames Community Service Outreach Program. The visit aimed to provide insights into the community's economic practices, such as mustard oil production and chamomile farming, while also exploring potential student engagement in the local school and senior citizen daycare. Upon arrival, the students were welcomed by community member Hari Nath Dangol, who introduced them to the concept of community-led initiatives that emerged after the 2015 earthquake. He emphasized the importance of preserving family businesses and socio-cultural traditions while promoting local entrepreneurship and research.

As the visit continued, students took a guided walk through the village, observing murals painted by local artist Sujit Maharjan, which reflect spiritual themes and the community's rich cultural identity. Discussions also touched on the significance of the Shikali Jatra festival and the challenges posed by road development projects, which locals fear could threaten their cultural sites. Mr. Dangol emphasized the ongoing struggle to balance infrastructure development with heritage conservation, highlighting concerns over maintaining its traditions amid modernization efforts.

The visit also shed light on Khokana's strong agricultural roots, with farming remaining a preferred livelihood over office jobs for many residents. Students learned about key crops cultivated in the area, including paddy, wheat, mustard seeds, garlic, and potatoes. The trip concluded with a visit to Nhyobhu Oil Mill, a government-funded initiative that further reinforced the importance of supporting local enterprises. The visit provided students with a deeper understanding of Khokana's economic landscape, cultural traditions, and the community's efforts to sustain its heritage while adapting to modern challenges.
