On June 7, a group of enthusiastic students took part in a community visit to Pilachhen, organized by the Community Service Outreach Program. Nestled in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley, Pilachhen is a historically rich settlement renowned for its deep Newar roots, resilient spirit, and community-centered vision for development.
Throughout the visit, students had the opportunity to engage with local residents, tour traditional homes, and observe firsthand how Pilachhen balances ancient customs with the realities of modern life. Elders shared stories of how the community evolved over generations, especially following the 2015 earthquake, and how it continues to rebuild with foresight and unity.
What made Pilachhen especially remarkable was its approach to sustainable development. Instead of pursuing unchecked modernization, the community remains committed to preserving cultural heritage, with efforts like restoring historical sites, inclusive urban planning, and actively involving youth in safeguarding traditions. These initiatives highlighted the strength of community-led development rooted in shared memory and cultural identity.
The visit concluded with a community mapping activity, where students worked together to document key landmarks, social spaces, and culturally significant sites within Pilachhen. The exercise encouraged collaboration, attention to detail, and a deeper spatial understanding of the community's structure and needs.
This visit to Pilachhen left students with a deeper appreciation of Nepal's rich cultural landscapes and a renewed sense of responsibility toward community-centered progress.
